There are so many definitions of diet out there. Just the fact that we can grab one word and twist it into something evil is a little scary. Diet is defined by Merriam Webster as: “a food and drinks regularly provided or consumed”. I am not sure if you see what I see here but basically, anyone and everyone who eats some sort of food and drinks anything, even water, is on a diet. We all have diets, the difference is, some are healthier than others. And then, there are those evil…fad diets.
The ones that we definitely want to stay away from are the fad diets. These are the ones that are not sustainable and we follow for a short period of time (some longer than others). These diets are used to lose weight and even to lower cholesterol and blood pressure by some. The problem is, in order to maintain a healthy body weight, we need a more consistent diet, something we can really stick to.
As you can read my post about picky eating, it is, unfortunately, harder for me than most to stay on a healthy diet as it limits my food intake dramatically. I would be eating way too much fruit which by the way can cause diabetes (more in another post) and barely any vegetables. I personally opt for portion control. I eat a little bit of everything that I like, I do limit desserts and almost cut them out completely to maybe one bit. With this said, I only change my eating patterns or habits, not the foods I eat.
We are all different and what works for some may not work for others. It is all in careful trial and error. I read this quote which really got to my soul: “Take care of your body, it’s the only place you have to live” by Jim Rohn. This quote is so very true, I put it up in my bathroom to remind me every day. Every decision that we make impacts our body, whether we decide to go up the stairs or take the elevator, that makes a difference. This does not mean that you will start losing weight but personally, I can attest to a body in motion stays in motion.
Anyway, I am getting sidetracked. There are tons of ways to adapt your diet in a way that works for you. Next time you hear the word diet, don’t be afraid, just listen carefully and make sure it is sustainable. This is the reason why some have chosen to call it a lifestyle. I rather call it like it is, a diet, your diet.
